Get Ahead of Fall Allergies!
By Michael S. Rowe, M.D., F.A.C.P., C.P.I.

Fall allergies can be quite miserable.  Cooler days and nights, periodic rainy and foggy days with evening dew leads to damp environments that are ideal for mold growth, yet indoor refuge leads to greater exposure to dust mites and animal dander.

Outdoor exposure to mold spores peak in the fall, just in time for autumn clean-up of your landscaping.  Although the fall color of the trees may be breathtaking, the fallen leaves, lawn clippings, and composting debris gather dampness and promote mold growth.

Consider wearing a dust mask when cleaning up outdoors or indoors.  Limit your exposure to the uncut and unkempt outdoor fields.  Wash your hands often, shower after going indoors after outside work, and keep your windows closed on high mold count days.

Dust mites are the main cause of dust allergies with animal dander from pets a close second.  Even the cleanest homes still have dust, a collection of dust mite waste, animal and human dander, mold spores, pollen grains, fine particles from paper and materials, food remnants, bacteria, and viruses.

Try and keep your home’s dust levels as low as possible.  Dusting and vacuuming thoroughly and frequently limits your exposure to the nasty allergens.  Use a high efficiency filter in your furnace and change it often.  Consider anti-dust mite covers for your bedding and keep your pets clean and groomed with periodic bathing and brushing.
