When Should You Start Treatment for Your Seasonal Allergies?
By Michael S. Rowe, M.D., F.A.C.P., C.P.I.

In April 2014, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first products of a new therapeutic treatment for allergies.  This novel treatment is now available for grass and ragweed sensitive individuals.  At the Allergy & Asthma Center of Michigan, Dr. Rowe was a principal investigator for many of these studies.

Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT), a daily tablet taken at home, extends the treatment options open to the 30 million Americans plagued by allergies.  SLIT treats the underlying cause of the patient’s symptoms, not strictly the symptoms alone.  It can be added to a prior program of medications that did not give adequate relief.

Although the treatment may give substantial benefit the first year taken, the daily tablets should be started at least 4 months before the seasonal allergies begin.
