Cold Weather Allergies and Asthma

Allergies and asthma don’t take time off just because it becomes colder outdoors.  In fact, these difficulties bother over 40 million Americans throughout the year.

Cold temperatures can create very hazardous conditions for allergies and asthma.  Some people develop itchy hives and body swellings when exposed to the cold.  These symptoms vary from annoying to possibly life-threatening.  Symptoms of runny and stuffy nose can worsen as allergy sufferers spend more time indoors during the colder weather leading to greater exposure to indoor allergens such as dust and animal dander.  Cold air can be a potent trigger for asthmatics, sometimes leading to significant coughing and difficulty breathing.

Warmer fall and winter weather can limit the hard freezes, keeping the pollen producing plants active and the mold spores flowing.

Dry air exposure increases outdoors as outdoor temperatures decrease and increases indoors with increasing usage of furnaces and fireplaces.  The ambient dryness can increase allergy and asthma symptoms and lead to greater chances of transmission of infectious organisms such as cold and flu viruses.  Saline nasal sprays and adequate indoor humidification (ideally 40-50%) can minimize your airway dryness.

Don’t suffer from year round allergies or asthma.  See Dr. Rowe and receive year round care and prevention of these annoying and possibly dangerous symptoms.
