Can an Infant’s Diet Affect their Risk of Future Food Allergies?

Many studies have shown that exclusive breast feeding can prevent or delay the onset of allergies in children.  A recent study published by a group of researchers in Great Britain examined the effect of solid food introduction to breast fed infants.

They found that babies who were introduced to solid foods before the age of seventeen weeks were twice as likely to develop food allergies by the age of 24 months.  Continued breast feeding while introducing cow’s milk also had a protective effect against allergies, probably due to the immunologic factors in breast milk.

Their conclusion was to recommend avoiding the introduction of solid foods until after seventeen weeks or longer, if possible, and to continue breast feeding as well while adding these foods.  Even if not breast feeding, try to delay the introduction of solid foods until after seventeen weeks.
