Can You Escape Your Allergies?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but there isn’t a region in the United States that is allergy free.  A recent published study found that, throughout the country, allergies vary by region, race, and socioeconomic status.

Volunteers had their blood tested for potential allergies to cat, dog, milk, egg, rat, mouse, cockroach, peanut, grass, ragweed, and shrimp.

In all areas of the country, 36 percent of tested individuals had at least one positive test to an allergen.  The pattern of sensitivity varied by region.

In the west, grass and ragweed allergy was higher with mold allergy higher in the east.  Indoor allergies were more common in the east than the west.  There were no significant differences in sensitivities regionally for peanut, shrimp, egg, dog, cat, rat, and mouse.

In adults, about 20 percent demonstrated the most common positive tests of dust mites, grass, and ragweed with about 12 percent sensitive to dog or cat.  Milk and egg were the most common positive tests in younger children.

Except for egg, the highest sensitivities to the tested allergens were in Non-Hispanic blacks.  Low economic status was strongly associated with cockroach and shrimp sensitivity.  Higher income groups had a greater sensitivity to dog and cat.
